How To Manipulate a CSV File

How To Manipulate a CSV File Man, just typing the title of this post makes me cringe with boredom. However, I have used this technique many times over my career, and just recently the issue came up from a JibberJobber user who imported his Contacts. His problem was that the first name and last name were in the same column, but we want that broken out when you do the import. Fixing this is actually really simple. In my user webinars I talk about opening a csv file in Excel, so you can see the pretty columns and rows but for this little exercise I recommend you open it up in Notepad. I know, I know: opening it in Notepad will make it really, really ugly.  Almost unreadable.  Especially files that have a lot of columns.  Just remember, csv stands for comma separated values, which means that each field is separated by a comma.  The comma tells Excel to put the next thing in a new column.  For example, this csv content: First Name, Last Name, Email Address, Phone Number Jason, Alba, Jason@Jason.com, 801.800.8123 Will look like this when opened in Excel: What if your file is formatted like this, instead? Notice the name is ONE column (not broken out)? Name, Email Address, Phone Number Jason Alba, Jason@Jason.com, 801.800.8123 John Doe, John@Doe.com, 555.555.1234 Sally Jesse, Sally@Jesse.com, 800.123.4567 Right now we arent parsing this for you the best and easiest thing to do is to fix it in the file.  Again, go to Notepad, open the CSV file, and then make these very simple changes: In the first row, which is the header row, change Name to First Name, Last Name.  This will make TWO columns instead of ONE (make sure to put the comma between the column names). In all the other rows, simply put a comma between the first and last name. Thats it it is very simple. Im guessing if I had a file with 100 records (names) I could put the comma inbetween the first and last name in about 4 or 5 minutes, or less This might seem like a pain, and when we redo the import we might  accommodate  for one name field, but for now this is really quite easy.  And YOU are empowered with the knowledge to manipulate your csv files! Now when you import it will import the name values into the right fields (first, last). How To Manipulate a CSV File Man, just typing the title of this post makes me cringe with boredom. 4-day course with Penelope Get the Guts to Start Freelancing

4-day course with Penelope Get the Guts to Start Freelancing After a long break from new courses, Melissa and I did a course on how to start freelancing. This is especially timely because over the last six months while I have been rejiggering my online courses Melissa has launched a freelance business. My first thought was: Oh. Crap. Melissa is too busy to do courses with me.  But she says that will never happen. So join me for Get the Guts to Start Freelancing: its a four-day online course with chat and constant chatter from me, and from Melissa who will sometimes moderate and sometimes cut me off to make her own points. Youll learn how to make a strategy to start and create tactics for attracting more clients as you grow. This course includes  four days of of video sessions and email-based course materials.    You can purchase this webinar for anytime, on-demand access. The cost is $195. Enroll now. Do you know why I can live on a farm, and travel to New York and LA whenever I want, and homeschool my kids, all at the same time? Because Im great at freelancing. I started freelancing when I kept losing jobs in my 20s. It was more of a safety net than a strategy. But learning to rely on myself as a freelancer meant that as my wants and needs changed through the years I have been able to make a wider range of choices to create the life I want. Ive freelanced as a writer, web developer, designer, event coordinator, publicity consultant. Ive probably freelanced in twenty different fields. The reason I could do that is that Ive created a freelance system for myself that translates to lots of different industries. And Im going to show you how to use my system. Its true that having a job and collecting a steady paycheck is comforting I still have fantasies of weekly paychecks. But there is pretty much no way to have a dynamic, growing, engaging career while making family a priority, unless you get control over your own hours. There are ten million courses about how to launch a startup. I teach some of them. But what Ive realized is that most people dont have a startup idea that will get them the life they want. Most people dont want 80-hour weeks and investors breathing down their throats. What most people want is an interesting life that includes time for paying attention to the people they love. And most of us can get that from freelancing. What freelancing really is: figuring out where you are most valuable in the workforce and finding the people who pay for that. Freelancing is also building relationships with people who value you for what you want to be recognized for. Its super-rewarding and its the perfect solution for most people feeling boxed in by corporate life. For most people the barrier to freelancing is they dont know how to get started. This course will show you how. Also, Melissa is going to talk about being a freelance recruiter. Her only experience with human resources is getting fired from fifty jobs, yet now shes making $10K/month working with human resources departments. Which also tells you that Melissa really doesnt need to work with me any more. She does it because we have so much fun. And you will too. So come change your life with our online party for the future freelance you. Day one: Create a path to success thats tailored to your skills Find your speciaity and tell your story in a way that naturally attracts new business. Learn secrets for presenting yourself in a genuine way to create a word-of-mouth business. Build a plan for freelancing that focuses your time on your strengths instead of your weaknesses. Day two: How to market your freelance business Identify the clients who will be easiest to reach, and create a plan for getting in front of them. Hear real-life case studies that show how people like you have successfully marketed themselves. Not all marketing is equal. Understand the type of marketing best-suited to your needs. Day three: Overcome the fear of financial stress All freelancers deal with cash-flow issues. Instead of solving them, learn to work with them. Uncover the freelance-friendly insurance industry yes, it exists. And find out about companies like Freshbooks that provide financial software specifically for freelancers. Manage your time so you don’t hate your life. You can’t work 24 hours a day. Know when to say enough is enough. Day four: QA Questions and answers ask me anything! So enroll now.

Summer Fitness Trends That Are Actually Fun - Honest!

Summer Fitness Trends That Are Actually Fun - Honest! Exercise. Ugh, right? Every image of female beauty, every dating guide and every health official will tell you that exercise is like, really important, but does it have to be so darn tedious? Actually, no! Forget the gym, the marathons, and all those gruelling obstacle courses through swamps that have become trendy lately because this year, exercise is all (as it should be) about the fun. Here’s just three ways that you can have a giggle and get in shape without losing the will to live: Trampolining Jumping up and down. It looks like fun and seems pretty easy to do, but is it a good way to ditch the fat and get fit? Absolutely.. Research shows that just ten minutes of bouncing is equivalent to a 30-minute jog. No more pavement pounding, no more expensive trainers and no more worrying about how your wobbly bits look in public â€" what’s not to love! If that’s not motivating enough, trampolining is also kind to your joints and limbs, helps to tone and strengthen your core, improves your balance and coordination, gives your heart and lungs a thorough workout and perhaps best of all, is so enjoyable that it’s easy to start and stick to. Trampoline parks are popping up all over the UK but if you’ve got a garden, you can set up your very own trampoline at home so that it’s there, ready and waiting for you every time that you fancy a jump. So to speak. Hula-Hooping Go retro and get yourself a hula-hoop. Much like trampolining, the humble hula offers both a pleasing flashback to those days of an energetic and toned youth when exercise meant nothing more than playing out, and it’s a cheap, easy and fun-filled way to get fit now. The American Council on Exercise conducted a study into the calorie-burning potential of a hula session and found that on average, for every minute spent jiggling that plastic hoop around your waist, arms or ankles, you can burn 7 calories. Now, seven calories might not sound like a lot, but minute for minute, it’s roughly equivalent to the burn you’d get from a bootcamp or kick-boxing class, without the ex-marine instructor who’s never eaten a biscuit in his life yelling at you to stop crying and work harder. Clubbercise If you’re motivated by group workouts then forget Zumba, this year it’s all about clubbercise. Simply put, it’s nightclub dancing without the killer heels or calorie-laden booze. (That comes later, after a clubbercise session you will have earned it!) Pitched as a form of exercise that “feels more like a night out than a workout,” clubbercise classes are becoming standard fare in gyms and leisure centres across the UK and all you need to take part in one is some comfortable clothing and a few glow sticks. You can, of course, recreate your own nightclub session at home but the advantage of an organised class is that you can’t give up and put the kettle on after 5 minutes, you might learn some new dance moves and you can comfortably boast that you’ve been for an intensive cardio workout. Whether you prefer to jump, wiggle or dance yourself fit â€" or perhaps keep things interesting with a mix of all three all of these fun ways to exercise can be done at home in your pyjamas. Brilliant. So, compile a playlist that makes you want to shake what your mama (or a love of cake) gave you, pick up your low-cost trampoline or other fitness accessories from BM and get moving. Words to Avoid When Writing a Resume

Words to Avoid When Writing a ResumeWhile you are crafting your resume, be sure to keep these words to avoid when writing a resume in mind. These will ensure that your resume stands out from the other applicants and gets noticed by a potential employer. The first thing you must do is start your resume with a greeting. When writing a resume, you will want to make sure that you put it all in one place. If you are using Microsoft Word, you will have the option of creating a Word document. This can be done by right clicking on the cursor and selecting Insert > Page from File and then selecting the Word document that you wish to create. There are also other options available for creating a resume; you can use an online application or create your resume directly in Word. The second thing to consider is that when you create a resume you want to make sure that it is designed to include your most important education, experience and skills. If you have more than one degree, this will also help y our resume. You do not want to start your resume with the 'just got out of' phase and leave out important information that would be needed for an employer to see the job experience you have gained. When it comes to selecting the background information for your resume, you should make sure that you do not leave it blank. You can choose a cover letter for your resume as well. You will want to take into consideration the state you reside in and the type of industry you are going into. If you are choosing a specialty for a position you want to make sure that you give specific information that is relevant.Another thing you will want to consider is your qualifications for your resume. You will need to make sure that you include information such as educational attainment, awards, certifications and degrees. You do not want to just say that you worked at a certain company or acquired that type of training if you were not qualified to work there. When writing a resume, remember that your resu me must be professionally designed so that you are given the best opportunity to get a job interview.Last but not least, the content of your resume should be professional. If you are a person who is just starting your career or is on probationary status, you will want to use your schooling as a part of your resume. For example, if you took a course on online marketing you would want to include that information on your resume. One last thing you want to consider is that you will want to write a resume that includes your skill sets. If you want to be a librarian, then make sure that you include this on your resume. Also, if you are a writer you should include that on your resume. You should definitely do the above mentioned things when crafting your resume. Keep in mind that your resume should be professional always looks professional. Your resume should stand out from the others and should be remembered by a potential employer.

Resume Mistakes That Can Ruin Your Job Search Prospects

Resume Mistakes That Can Ruin Your Job Search Prospects ?You want to impress the recruiter as soon as possible, and a great way to achieve this is to avoid all the common mistakes that infuriate recruiters. No KeywordsYes you read right. Keywords are not just for website content, but it has evolved to become an important part of your resume. You may not upset your recruiter with this mistake, but your resume might never be viewed by the recruiter, which is even worse.?These days, your resume will go through a word recognition software program which will then extract the keywords related to the job. If these are not included, your resume immediately is immediately eliminated from the process.eval?Visit the company website and take a detailed look at the job ad.? You should find a lot of great keywords there.?If this new development makes you nervous, you can always find some cheap resume writing services, to eliminate the guessing.Several PagesBy now, we are aware of the one page resume, yet some applicants still feel it’s necessary to wr ite long resumes that run over two pages.?You need to understand that recruiters are busy and they will likely not read through your 10 page resume.??Keep it to a max of 2 pages, but nothing more. Also, do not try to include everything on these 2 pages, because you will end up with an unreadable font and no structure.?These resume mistakes are easily avoidable and therefor receives no more mercy from recruiters. Highlight the most important achievements that can be measured by the recruiter or the employer.Spelling and Grammar MistakesWe should not be discussing spelling and grammar mistakes anymore, yet here we are. Many applicants still fail to proofread their resumes and it is unacceptable. If you really want to get the job, you have to go the extra mile.eval? You could have all the right requirements and fit the job perfectly, but a poorly written resume will upset the recruiter. If you have poor language skills, find cheap professional resume writers and leave the job to the pro fessionals.?They probably have tools and programs to eliminate any spelling and grammar mistakes.Generic Cover LetterThis is a huge mistake and comes down to laziness. Every job deserves a letter specifically written for the position the company is offering. This will show that you are interested and deem this as an important application.?You cannot send the same generic cover letter to all recruiters in the hopes of it being accepted.eval? Be specific in your cover letter about why the position is of interest to you. You can also match your skills to what is required.?These recruiter see so many cover letters and can usually tell if it is generic or specifically written for the job.ExaggeratingIt is never a good idea to provide false information in a job application, but it is also not acceptable o make a big deal of a small achievement. Mention the achievement and then let it be.?Do not exaggerate anything in your resume, but rather come across as a modest person with much to lear n. There should always be room for improvement, so do not play up too much.Dishonesty is one of the biggest mistakes an applicant can do. You do not only waste your own time, but also that of the recruiter.?Always know that every qualification and achievement will be checked and if it comes out that you have been dishonest, it takes a lot of credibility away from you.Unexplained Job GapsYou need to explain why you were between jobs at a certain time on your resume. Many applicants just simply leave this information out without any explanation.?This is information is very important to recruiters in order for them to sum up your character.?It does not need to be a long explanation, but a one line sentence should be sufficient.eval? You can further explain if you are called for an interview.Infographic Credit â€" CheapResumeWritingServices.orgConclusionPay careful attention to the application requirements and make sure that you get it right. Do not miss a step, because you might be the perfect candidate and it would be terrible if your application is declined because you failed to comply.?Proofread your resume and make the necessary edits. I would even suggest that you ask someone you can trust to read through your resume, just to be safe.?You haveone chance to impress a recruiter, so make the most of it.?Your application is going to be a reflection of you as a person and the recruiters will base their decisions off that.evalGood luck on your journey to finding a job and remember, you are worth it.

My top 10 feel-good movies - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

My top 10 feel-good movies - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Im going completely off-script in this post to?talk about something unrelated to happiness at work but still close to my heart: Feel-good movies. I?have?a weakness for feel-good films and Im not ashamed to admit it :) I love the fact that these?movies show the world as a warm and happy place where good things happen to nice people, where everything eventually has a happy ending, where people can be themselves and are accepted for who they are and where second chances can be found?by those who dont succeed at first. This?may even be a more accurate portrayal of how the world actually is. I know its more common to see the world as hard, unfair and dog-eat-dog but there are equally compelling arguments that show?that the world favors those who are nice and cooperate. And feel-good films reflect that. So here is?my top 10 list of feel-good films in no particular order. The Fisher King (1991) Terry Gilliams visually stunning film?has Robin Williams in one of his most challenging and touching roles. It is a beautiful story of redemption and forgiveness and of love and madness. My rating: 10/10 Favorite quote: Theres three things in this world that you need: Respect for all kinds of life, a nice bowel movement on a regular basis, and a navy blazer. Down by Law (1986) A black and white minimalist masterpiece from Jim Jarmusch with an incredibly unlikely main cast of Tom Waits, John Lurie and Roberto Benigni. This is?quite simply one of the most beautiful movies ever made. You could blow up pretty much any single frame of this movie and hang it as a poster. My?rating: 10/10 Favorite quote: Its a sad and beautiful world. Strictly Ballroom (1992) The fascinating thing about this Baz Luhrman movie is that it is both a tremendous parody of a dance movie AND a tremendous dance movie. Its about not being afraid of being different and not living in fear. My rating: 10/10 Favorite quote: Vivir con miedo, es como vivir a medias! (Living in fear, is only half-living.) Love Actually (2003) The ultimate romantic comedy, feel-good movie and Christmas movie rolled into one. The?all-star cast includes Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson and Billy Bob Thornton.?At our house, we?have friends over every year?in early December and watch it together. My rating: 10/10 Favorite quote: Okay, Dad. Lets do it. Lets go get the shit kicked out of us by love. Am?lie (2001) This movie by Jean-Pierre Jeunet leans slightly into the magical realism genre without becoming too weird. Favorite quote: Narrator: Am?lie still seeks solitude. She amuses herself with silly questions about the world below, such as How many people are having an orgasm right now? [scenes of various orgasms taking place] Am?lie: Fifteen. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) 3 leading?actors known mainly for being in action movies play drag queens and while Hugo Weaving and Terrence Stamp are both fanastic Guy Pearce especially takes to the role as a duck to water. A wonderful movie about being different. Look out for the scene where they walk out of theie bus in small-town Australia in full drag it was shot on an actual street in Australia and the reactions you see are genuine. My rating: 10/10 Favorite quote: Thats just what this country needs: a cock in a frock on a rock. Dodgeball Sure this is ostensibly a screwball comedy (and it is really, really funny) but its also a heartwarming story of friendship and being yourself. My rating: 9/10 Favorite quote: Here at Globo Gym were better than you, and we know it. Stardust (2007) Neil Gaiman is an amazing writer whether he works in comics (his Sandman series is the very best of the genre) or in novels. This beautiful movie is a classic fairy tale with some cool twists. My rating: 9/10 Favorite quote: [the pirates have just discovered Captain Shakespeare in drag] Skinny Pirate: Whats the problem? Captain Shakespeare: Its my reputation. Skinny Pirate: No. No. Dont be silly. Nonsense. Old Pirate: Its all right, Captain. We always knew you were a whoopsie. Much Ado About Nothing (2012) While?filming his big-budget superhero movie The Avengers, Joss Whedon needed to relax. So he got some friends over to his house for a couple of?weeks where they shot Much Ado About Nothing in black and white and with modern costumes but with the original Shakespeare text. It is hilarious, its a feel-good love story and you can just tell that everyone there had a great time making it. My rating: 10/10 Favorite quote: ?I wish my horse had the speed of your tongue.? Field of Dreams (1989) The ultimate movie of second chances. Goes directly into magical realism but without losing its sense of fun and humanity. My rating: 9/10 Favorite quote: Is this heaven? Its Iowa. More feel-good films Honorable mention goes to these movies: A wonderful life Slumdog millionaire Russian pizza blues Eat drink man woman Pane e tulipani Out of Rosenheim (Bagdad Cafe) The Intouchables Pleasantville Good Will Hunting The snapper Hable con ella Jonathan Livingston Seagull Mitt liv som hund Royal Tenenbaums Shawshank redemption Smoke La vita e bella What?s eating Gilbert Grape Moulin Rouge Rocky Horror Picture Show Oceans eleven Your take Have you seen any of these list??Did I?forget your favorite feel-good movie? Should You Add Keywords to Your C-Level Resume

Should You Add Keywords to Your C-Level Resume You c-level resume should use keywords to attract attention. Keywords in a resume? Who needs them? If you’re trying to land a c-level position,  you  need them! More than three quarters of employers rely on keywords to narrow their vast pool of applicants to choose the most promising and bring them to the interview stage. Why Keywords Are Important in a Resume Recruiters looking for the winning  c-level resume  for a specific position rely on automated resume databases to cull through hundreds and often thousands of online resume submissions collected by a firm. When a recruiter places an ad for a position opening, he or she usually includes a  punch list of must-have criteria  for the successful applicant. Similarly, when sorting through resumes of applicants responding to the position, he or she will use must-have keywords. These might include the name of the city where the position is based, specific skills, required foreign languages, programming languages or educational degrees. The recruiter enters these keywords into his or her search criteria and may immediately cull 4,000 resumes down to 76. He or she will then quickly scan those 76, spending literally seconds on each one to decide if it is a “keeper.” The more must-have keywords he or she sees in that brief scan, the more likely that candidate will move to the next stage and land a phone or in-person interview. Effective Ways to Use Keywords to Boost Your Interview Odds You can use keywords to your advantage when you know how important they are. When you are applying for a c-level job, jot down buzz words from the punch list of “must-have” qualifications in the job posting. In addition to using these words often and as near the top of your resume a possible, use them in your cover letter. Recruiters expect a good executive resume cover letter to be concise and to the point and to spell out quickly why they should take a closer look at the resume it is introducing. Fitting in the most important keywords without appearing to “keyword stuff”  your cover letter is an art.  The best approach is to enlist guidance from the  best resume writing service  you can find to boost your chances. Beyond creating an intriguing executive resume cover letter, it’s a good idea to create a “skills” punch list to include in your resume. Regurgitate the “must-haves” from the job listing into a “skills” section for your resume. Last but not least, use keywords naturally throughout your resume to boost the odds a recruiter’s automated system will flag you as an outstanding candidate. Invest in Skilled Professional Help When you’re seeking a c-level position, your c-level resume should change with each job you apply for. This can be time-consuming and a bit mind-boggling if writing isn’t your forte. Don’t risk losing out on a perfect position because your resume or cover letter wasn’t up to par. Do yourself a favor and hire a pro with a proven track record.  Contact us  and leave the details to us.
